Laboratory assay overview

This panel tests for specific IgE antibodies to 5 insect venoms that are commonly associated with allergies. Allergen-specific serum IgE testing is considered comparable to skin testing and may be preferred in some clinical situations. However, a positive test result only indicates that a patient is sensitized to the allergen of concern. Many IgE-sensitized individuals do not develop any symptoms when exposed to the allergen. A diagnosis of allergy should only be made by a trained medical provider after conducting a thorough clinical evaluation [1]. More specific information about allergens included in this panel may be found on the Quest Diagnostics Test Directory. Reference 1. Bernstein IL, et al. Laboratory assay overview

This panel tests for specific IgE antibodies to 5 different stinging insects that are commonly associated with allergies. Laboratory assay overview

This test detects the presence of specific IgE against honey bees. A positive test only indicates that a person is sensitized and potentially allergic to this allergen. A diagnosis of allergy requires clinical signs and symptoms that appear to be associated with exposure to the allergen in addition to the detection of markers of IgE sensitization [1]. Laboratory assay overview

Support the diagnosis of hymenoptera venom allergy (HVA) by detection of sIgE antibodies to whole venom extracts and individual allergenic venom proteins. Identifying sIgE responses to specific molecular targets with component resolved diagnostics (CRD) helps fine-tune the diagnosis by distinguishing species-specific, co-reactive, or cross-reactive sensitizations. An accurate diagnosis, in turn, facilitates treatment, including prescription of venom immunotherapy.1

Verify these ranges and sources

We compile every detail above directly from named laboratory directories and published clinical studies. Laboratories calculate standard reference intervals from the statistical distribution of tested populations for a specific assay method and demographic group, rather than setting universal optimal targets.
