    Method and collection
    Method
Conventional tissue culture and shell vial cell cultures; FA confirmation
    Collection
Bronchoalveolar lavage: Submit 10 to 50 mL fluid in sterile leakproof container and refrigerate. Urine: A first morning clean catch urine should be submitted in a sterile screw-cap container. Refrigerate immediately and ship at 4°C. Do not freeze. Blood/buffy coat/bone marrow: Collect two green-top (heparin) tubes. Transport at room temperature as soon as possible. Do not freeze. Other: Collect a viral transport for throat, cervical, semen, and biopsy sources. Refrigerate immediately and ship at 4°C. Do not freeze.

    Method and collection
    Method
Immunofluorescence Assay (IFA) • Tissue Culture
    Collection
For body fluids add an equal volume of specimen to transport medium (VCM or equivalent). To maintain optimum viability, place swab or fluid into VCM (equal volumes of fluid and VCM) or equivalent media and transport to the laboratory as soon as possible. Best recovery is achieved when samples are frozen at -70° C or colder. Storage or transport at -20° C is not acceptable. If frozen -70° C transport is not possible, specimens can be refrigerated at 2-8° C or kept on wet ice following collection and while in transport. Note: PCR is the preferred testing method for the detection of HSV and Enterovirus in CSF.

We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
