- Specimen: Kidney, muscle, nerve, cilia (brushing and biopsies). Immediately after removal of tissue, the specimen should be immersed in fixative. For samples other than listed, please contact the lab at 972-966-7207 1. Please provide patient information including: - Patient information (name, age, etc.) - Patient history or pathologist comments - Specimen type - Reason for testing - Type of fixative - Time and duration of fixation - Physician contact information 2. Indicate the patient's first and last name and include a second unique identifier on each of the vials. The name on the vials must match the paperwork being sent with the specimens. The specimen source and fixative used must be clearly marked on each vial. 3. For needle core biopsies, place directly into fixative. Avoid crushing tissue when handling. 4. For renal biopsies, specimen should be examined for the presence of glomeruli prior to submission to med fusion. Use sharp razor blade or scalpel to remove at least 1 mm cubes (2-3 glomeruli) from the ends of cores for EM. Larger samples should be sectioned into 1x1x1 mm strips before fixing. 5. For paraffin embedded tissue, the area of interest should be marked clearly on the microscopic slide corresponding to the block submitted for processing. The paraffin block and the slide should be labeled with the record number and patient name. 6. For ciliary brushing, immediately immerse the brush in fixative. The results of the ultrastructural evaluation are images that will be made available to physicians via the med fusion Client Collaboration Portal. Each site/physician will be given a unique address and log in credentials to access their images. Or the med fusion EM lab provides hard copies at the client's request. Note: Paraffin-embedded samples not accepted for cilia. Do not freeze. Do not reject.

We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
