Ranges

Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ

Quest Diagnostics, HIV-1 and HIV-2 RNA, Qualitative Real-Time PCR 14312

  • PrEP, Male, Injectable Monitor + HIV RNA 254736

    6 analytes · Serum · Fasting not stated · Turnaround 2 - 3 days (testing performed daily)

    Method and collection
    Method
    See individual test components.
    Preparation
Patient should not have urinated for one hour prior to specimen collection.
    Collection
Serum specimen: Usual blood collection technique. Urine specimen: The patient should not have urinated for at least one hour prior to specimen collection. Direct patient to provide a first-catch urine (approximately 20 to 30 mL of the initial urine stream) into a urine collection cup free of any preservatives. Collection of larger volumes of urine may result in specimen dilution that may reduce test sensitivity; lesser volumes may not adequately rinse organisms into the specimen. Add urine to the APTIMA® Combo 2 urine collection device. The final volume must be between the two black lines on the device (about 2 mL). PCR test: Centrifuge sample within 24 hours of collection. Transfer serum to a screw-cap polypropylene transport tube. Ship frozen (preferred) or refrigerated.

Panels that include this biomarker

  • HIV-1 and HIV-2 RNA, Qualitative Real-Time PCR 14312

2 analytes · Serum · Fasting not stated

    Method and collection
    Method
    Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction
    Collection
Serum: Collect in a serum separator tube or red-top tube (no gel). The tube should be centrifuged after clotting. Spun serum separator tubes may be submitted at room temperature or refrigerated unopened without transfer to a plastic screw-cap vial. Red-top tube (no gel) serum should be transferred to a plastic screw-cap vial and submitted for testing. Plasma: Collect in an EDTA (lavender-top) tube and centrifuge tube within 24 hours of collection. Transfer plasma to a plastic screw-cap vial, label as plasma and submit for testing. Submitted tubes must be labeled with patient identifier and submitted only for HIV testing.

We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
