Ranges

Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ

    7 analytes · Serum · Fasting required

    Method and collection
    Method
Immunoassay (IA) • Liquid Chromatography/Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS/MS)
    Preparation
Overnight fasting is required. Avoid vitamin supplements for 24 hours prior to collection.
    Collection
Patients should be 18 years of age or greater. Folate & Vitamin B12: Transfer 2 mL (1 mL min) serum into plastic transport tube, ship frozen. Vitamin B2, B3, B5: Transfer 2 mL (1 mL min) serum into an amber vial (or wrap with aluminum foil), ship frozen. Vitamin B6: Transfer 3 mL (1 mL min) EDTA plasma into an amber vial (or wrap with aluminum foil), ship frozen. Separate cells within 24 hours by centrifugation for 5-10 minutes. Transfer plasma to an amber polypropylene or polyethylene transport tube to protect from light. Alternately, neutral color polypropylene or polyethylene tube can be used if wrapped in aluminum foil. Freeze the tubes at -10 to -30° C. Ship frozen. Vitamin B1: Transfer 3 mL (1 mL min) EDTA whole blood into an amber vial (or wrap with aluminum foil), ship frozen. Dietary supplements containing biotin may interfere in assays and may skew analyte results to be either falsely high or falsely low. For patients receiving the recommended daily doses of biotin, draw samples at least 8 hours following the last biotin supplementation. For patients on mega-doses of biotin supplements, draw samples at least 72 hours following the last biotin supplementation. Remove serum or plasma from cells within 4 hours of collection.

Verify these ranges and sources

We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
