Ranges

Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ

    Method and collection
    Method
    Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry
    Preparation
Optimum time to collect sample: 0.5 to 1 hour before next dose (trough) at steady-state (3-5 days after treatment with oral doses).
    Collection
Serum: Collect blood in a red-top tube (no gel). Allow blood to clot at 15-28° C for 20-30 minutes. Centrifuge at 25-28° C (2200-2500 rpm, 1000 x g) for 8-10 minutes. Transfer serum to polypropylene or polyethylene transport tube. Ship refrigerated (cold packs). Samples left at room temperature for more than 3 days are not acceptable. Plasma: Draw blood into an EDTA (lavender-top) tube. Separate cells by centrifugation at 18-25° C (2500-2800 rpm) for 5-10 minutes. Transfer plasma to polypropylene or polyethylene transport tube. Ship refrigerated (cold packs). Samples left at room temperature for more than 3 days are not acceptable.

We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
