Ranges

Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ

Single-analyte tests

  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae , Rectal Swab, NAA 188730

    Swab · Fasting not stated · Turnaround 2 - 3 days

    Method and collection
    Method
    Nucleic acid amplification (NAA)
    Collection
Partially peel open the swab package. Remove the swab. Do not touch the soft tip or lay the swab down. If the soft tip is touched, the swab is laid down or the swab is dropped, use a new Aptima Multitest Swab Specimen Collection Kit. Hold the swab, placing your thumb and forefinger in the middle of the swab shaft covering the score line. Do not hold the swab shaft below the score line. Carefully insert the swab into the rectum about 1 to 2 inches (3 to 5 cm) past the anal margin and gently rotate the swab clockwise for five to 10 seconds. Withdraw the swab without touching the skin. While holding the swab in the same hand, unscrew the cap from the tube. Do not spill the contents of the tube. If the contents of the tube are spilled, use a new Aptima Multitest Swab Specimen Collection Kit. Immediately place the swab into the transport tube so that the score line is at the top of the tube. Carefully break the swab shaft at the score line against the side of the tube. Immediately discard the top portion of the swab shaft. Tightly screw the cap onto the tube.

Swab · Fasting not stated · Turnaround Set up: Mon-Sat (All shifts); Report available: 2-5 days

    Method and collection
    Method
    Transcription-Mediated Amplification (TMA)
    Collection
Use the Aptima Multitest transport tube (orange label). Insert swab approximately 3-5 cm into the rectum. Rotate swab against the rectal wall at least 3 times. Withdraw the swab carefully. Swabs that are grossly contaminated with feces should be discarded and the collection repeated. Remove the cap from the swab specimen transport tube and immediately place the swab into the transport tube. Carefully break the swab shaft at the score line. Re-cap the swab specimen transport tube tightly, label and ship to the lab. Note: Results from the Aptima Combo 2 Assay should be interpreted in conjunction with other laboratory and clinical data available to the clinician. The Aptima Combo 2 Assay is not intended for the evaluation of suspected sexual abuse or for other medico-legal indications. We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
