Parainfluenza 2

A parainfluenza test checks a fluid sample from your nose or lungs for the four types of parainfluenza viruses (also called human parainfluenza viruses, or HPIVs). These viruses are a common cause of respiratory (breathing) illnesses, especially in spring, summer, and fall.

Ranges

Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ

Panels that include this biomarker

  • Viral Culture, Rapid, Respiratory 186015

    7 analytes · Swab · Fasting not stated · Turnaround 4 - 5 days

    Method and collection
    Method
Inoculation of specimen into shell vials or equivalent multiwell plate cell cultures, and identification by DFA or other methods
    Collection
Specimen should be collected during acute phase of disease. Throat swab: Carefully rub the posterior wall of the nasopharynx with a dry, sterile swab. Avoid touching the tongue or buccal mucosa. Place swab in viral transport tube.

Panels that include this biomarker

  • Parainfluenza Virus Antigen Detection, DFA 39494

3 analytes · Swab · Fasting not stated · Turnaround Set up: Mon-Sat

    Method and collection
    Method
    Direct Immunofluorescence Assay
    Collection
Specimen in equal volume of VCM or equivalent transport medium or in a sterile container. Swabs in VCM or equivalent. To maintain optimum viability, place swab or fluid into VCM (equal volumes of fluid and VCM) or equivalent and transport the specimen to the laboratory as soon as possible. Best recovery is obtained when the specimens are refrigerated at 2-8° C or kept on wet ice following collection and while in transit. If there will be a long delay before processing, specimens in VCM or equivalent should be frozen at -70° C or colder and transported on dry ice. Storage or transport at -20° C is not acceptable. Note: Slides are no longer acceptable.

Verify these ranges and sources

We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
