Ranges
Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ
Quest Diagnostics, Porphobilinogen, Quantitative, Random Urine 6329
| Population | Interval |
|---|---|
| ≤17 Years | <0.36 mg/g creat |
| ≥18 Years | <0.22 mg/g creat |

- On collection of random urine, it is advisable not to use first voided morning specimen, late evening specimen after 8 PM, or specimen obtained following excessive fluid intake. Transfer the urine into a Labcorp amber plastic frozen transport tube with amber cap (Labcorp No. 78656). If ordered with Δ-ALA, pH must be <6. Label the container with the patient's name and date. The specimen should be frozen immediately and maintained frozen until tested. (If amber tube and cap are not available, cover a clear plastic transport tube completely from top to bottom with aluminum foil. Identify the specimen with the patient's name directly on the transport tube and the outside of the aluminum foil. Secure with tape.) To avoid delays in turnaround time when requesting multiple tests on frozen samples, please submit separate frozen specimens for each test requested.

- Urine should be refrigerated and protected from light. Whenever possible, the specimen should be collected during an acute episode because porphobilinogen (PBG) may decrease rapidly upon remission. PBG may also degrade when samples are exposed to UV light for extended periods, or are transported at ambient temperature. If an amber collection jug/urine cup is not available, the sample must be protected from light by completely wrapping the container in aluminum foil. PBG is most stable at pH 6-7, but all samples may be sent with or without preservative. All results should be interpreted in the context of clinical findings, relevant history, and other laboratory data.

We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
