Ranges
Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ

- Do not refrigerate or freeze. Effective 11/01/96, specimens submitted in ACD tubes (yellow-top) will no longer be accepted because of the high incidence of platelet clumping associated with this anticoagulant. If the platelet count is less than 20,000/ccm, submit 7-10 mL of whole blood. Platelet Count | Minimum Volume ≥45,000 | 2 mL 20,000-45,000 | 4 mL ≤20,000 | 10 mL Pediatric minimum volume: The minimum volume is platelet count dependent. If possible, submit at least 1 mL EDTA blood.

Verify these ranges and sources
We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
