Ranges
Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ
Quest Diagnostics, Lactate/Pyruvate, Filtrate 11296
| Population | Interval |
|---|---|
| Pyruvic Acid (Pyruvate), Blood | 0.30-1.50 mg/dL |
| Lactic Acid | 9.0-16.0 mg/dL |
| Lactate/Pyruvate Ratio | 10-20 |

- Method
- Enzymatic
- Collection
- Collect 4 mL whole blood EDTA (lavender-top), sodium or lithium heparin (green-top), or fluoride oxalate (gray-top) tube and immediately, vigorously mix with 4 mL pre-chilled, ice cold 7% or 8% Perchloric Acid. Let mixture stand for 10 minutes; then, centrifuge. Separate and submit 4.5 mL supernatant fluid for assay, refrigerated 2-8° C. Transport refrigerated (cold packs). Maintain 1:1 ratio for whole blood and Perchloric acid.

Pyruvic Acid, Whole Blood 004788
Blood · Fasting not stated · Turnaround 4 - 6 days
Labcorp catalog pageMethod and collection
- Method
- Pyruvate − lactate; spectrophotometry
- Preparation
- Patient should be in a fasting and resting state (should not exercise).
- Collection
- Draw blood into chilled gray-top tube. Immediately after blood is drawn, add 2 mL of whole blood from the gray-top tube to 2 mL of 8% perchloric acid (PeopleSoft No. 111749) (7 mL of 70% perchloric acid diluted to 100 mL with deionized water). Note: Use 1:1 blood (ie, equal parts) to 8% perchloric ratio if less blood is obtained. Shake mixture vigorously for about 30 seconds. Refrigerate for five minutes to ensure complete protein precipitation. Centrifuge 5 to 10 minutes at approximately 1500xg. Immediately transfer the clear supernatant to a transport tube. Label the transport tube as "supernatant" and send to the laboratory. Note: A second centrifugation of the supernatant may be necessary to obtain a clear protein-free solution.

Verify these ranges and sources
We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
