Ranges
Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ

- Whole blood: 1 full EDTA (lavender-top) tube. Submit at room temperature. Serum: 1 spun serum separator tube (SST). Submit at room temperature. Plasma: Collect 2 EDTA (lavender-top) tubes. Spin and pour off into transport tubes. Submit refrigerated. Do not freeze whole blood or any samples stored in primary tube. Freshly drawn specimens (whole blood) may be stored at 2-25° C for up to 24 hours prior to centrifugation. Separate plasma from cells within 24 hours of collection by centrifugation. Follow manufacturer's instructions for collection tube handling.

- Respiratory samples in M4 media: Use sterile vials containing 3 mL of sterile M4 media. If using swabs, use only sterile Dacron® or Rayon swabs with plastic or wire shafts.. DO NOT use calcium alginate swabs, as they may contain substances that inhibit PCR testing. Break applicator sticks off near the tip to permit tightening of the cap. Sputum: Collect in a sputum collection kit or a sterile, plastic container with a leak-proof cap.. Bronchial lavage: Collect in a sterile container with a leak-proof cap.

- Male urine: Patient should not have urinated within one hour prior to collection
- Collection
- Vaginal swabs: Follow instructions in the Aptima Vaginal Swab Collection Kit or Multitest Collection Kit (orange label). Male urethral swabs: Follow instructions in the Aptima Unisex Swab Specimen Collection Kit (white label). Swab specimen collection kit (orange or white label). Excess mucus should be removed prior to sampling. Male urine: Direct patient to provide a first-catch urine (a maximum of 20-30 mL of the initial urine stream) into a urine collection cup free of any preservatives. 2 mL of urine specimen must be transferred into the Aptima urine specimen transport within 24 hours of collection and before being assayed. Use the tube provided in the urine specimen collection kit. The fluid (urine plus transport media) level in the urine transport tube must fall within the clear pane on the tube label.

- Swab samples in M4, VCM or UTM transport media: Use only sterile Dacron or Rayon swabs. Do not use calcium alginate swabs, as they may contain substances that inhibit PCR testing. Break applicator sticks off near the tip to permit tightening of the cap. Bronchial lavage/wash: Collect in a sterile container with a leak-proof cap. Verify these ranges and sources
We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
