Ranges
Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ
Quest Diagnostics, Micronutrient, Vitamin C 10181
| Population | Interval |
|---|---|
| Male ≥18 years | 0.2-2.1 mg/dL |
| Female ≥18 years | 0.3-2.7 mg/dL |
Quest Diagnostics, Vitamin C 929
| Population | Interval |
|---|---|
| Female | 0.3-2.7 mg/dL |
| Male | 0.2-2.1 mg/dL |

Serum · Fasting not stated · Turnaround Set up: Tues-Sat
Quest Diagnostics catalog pageMethod and collection
- Method
- Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry
- Preparation
- Overnight fasting is preferred. Refrain from eating fruits and from taking vitamin C supplements for 24 hours prior to collection.
- Collection
- Patients should be 18 years of age or greater. Centrifuge within 1 hour of collection. Immediately separate serum from the cells into a clean, plastic transport tube. Freeze. Protect from light. If unable to centrifuge immediately, sample should be covered with aluminum foil and placed on ice until serum can be separated from cells. Transport to the laboratory frozen. For remote collection sites, or those with no access to ultra-low freezers or dry ice, it is recommended to schedule patient visits/draws after 12:00 p.m. local time and store the samples at -10 ° C to -30° C freezers (stable for 8 hours) until picked up by courier. Couriers should then transfer samples to -70° C storage (on dry ice) while enroute to the performing site location.

- Method
- Chromatography • Liquid Chromatography/Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS/MS)
- Preparation
- Overnight fasting required. Avoid taking Coenzyme Q10 supplements the morning of the test. Refrain from eating fruits or taking vitamin C supplements 24 hours prior to collection.
- Collection
- Patients should be 18 years of age or greater. Gently invert specimen 5 times (DO NOT SHAKE!), allow to clot for 30-60 minutes at room temperature, centrifuge 10 minutes. Separate serum into 3 amber plastic transport tubes: 1 mL (0.5 mL min) for Vitamin A and E, protect from light, ship frozen (can be refrigerated). 1 mL (0.5 mL min) for Vitamin C, freeze immediately, protect from light, ship frozen. 1 mL (0.5 mL min) for CoQ10, protect from light, ship refrigerated. Do not ship on dry ice. Coenzyme Q10 must NOT be shipped on dry ice. Vitamin C must be shipped on dry ice. Additionally, for remote collection sites, or those with no access to ultra-low freezers or dry ice, it is recommended to schedule patient visits/draws after 12:00 p.m. local time and store the samples at -10° C to -30° C freezers (stable for 8 hours) until picked up by courier. - Method
- Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS)
- Collection
- Collect blood by venipuncture into a green-top containing lithium heparin and mix immediately by gentle inversion at least six times to ensure adequate mixing. Plasma must be separated from cells immediately after venipuncture and transferred to light-protected amber plastic tube. Separated plasma must be placed on dry ice for shipment within 4 hours of separation. To avoid delays in turnaround time when requesting multiple tests on frozen samples, please submit separate frozen specimens for each test requested.

We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
