Ranges

Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ

  • Zinc, RBC 070029

    Blood · Fasting not stated · Turnaround 2 - 4 days

    Method and collection
    Method
    Inductively-coupled plasma/mass spectrometry (ICP/MS)
    Collection
Centrifuge tube within 45 minutes of collection and separate plasma from cells. Discard the plasma. Using the original collection tube, submit only the RBCs to the laboratory.

Single-analyte tests

  • Zinc, RBC 6354

Blood · Fasting not stated · Turnaround Set up: Tues-Sat

    Method and collection
    Method
    Inductively Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectrometry (ICP/MS)
    Collection
Red blood cells trace metal: Use the royal blue-top trace metal evacuated tube with EDTA or sodium heparin, for RBC trace metal testing. Packed Cells: Centrifuge to separate plasma from RBC's and discard plasma. Transfer RBC's to a plastic transfer vial from a Quest Diagnostics (trace element and metal-free) collection kit or transfer to a plastic screw-cap vial.

Verify these ranges and sources

We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
