Ranges
Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ

- Method
- Immunochemiluminometric assay (ICMA)
- Collection
- Patient should empty the bladder, then drink a large glass of water and collect a urine sample within one hour. Significant loss of β2-microglobulin activity may occur in acidic urine (pH ≤6). Urine should always be collected at high diuresis and the pH adjusted to between 6 and 8 with 1 mol/L sodium hydroxide.

- Collection
- As β2-microglobulin can degrade under acidic conditions in the bladder, workers should empty their bladder and then drink a large glass of water at the start of the visit. Urine should then be collected within one hour. The pH of the urine should be measured and adjusted to 6-8, if necessary, using 0.1 N NaOH.

- Collection
- 1. Patient should void bladder, then drink at least 500 mL (approximately 17 oz) of water. 2. A urine sample should be collected within 1 hour. 3. Pour exactly 10 mL of random urine into a Quest Diagnostics Beta-2 Microglobulin Transport Tube (available through Client Supply). 4. Ship room temperature. 5. Alternatively, if the collection tubes are not available, pH the specimen must be adjusted to between 6 and 8 using 1N NaOH prior to shipping. Beta-2 Microglobulin in urine is unstable in acidic urine (less than pH 6). Exactly 10 mL of urine in the Quest Diagnostics Beta-2 Microglobulin Transport Tube is required to achieve the required pH of between 6 and 8. Any volume above or below 10 mL will result in a pH that is outside the acceptable range.

We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
