Ranges
Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ
Quest Diagnostics, Micronutrient, Cadmium, Blood 10242
| Population | Interval |
|---|---|
| Adults, Non-Smokers | 1.7 mcg/L or less |
| Adults, Smokers | 5.0 mcg/L or less |
| OSHA Reference Range | 5.0 mcg/L |
| Toxic Concentration | Early signs of toxicity have been observed at 30 mcg/L |
Quest Diagnostics, Cadmium, Blood 299
| Population | Interval |
|---|---|
| Adults, Non-Smokers | ≤1.7 mcg/L |
| Adults, Smokers | ≤5.0 mcg/L |
| OSHA Reference Range | ≤5.0 mcg/L |
| Toxic Concentration | Early signs of toxicity have been observed at 30 mcg/L |

- Three separate collections are required. One collection of blood and two separate collections of urine. Specimen 1: One EDTA (royal blue-top) tube or sodium heparin (royal blue-top) tube of whole blood. Specimen 2: For urine cadmium and creatinine: Collect urine in an acid-washed or metal-free plastic container. Label as Cadmium/Creatinine. Specimen 3: Once patient has voided bladder for cadmium/creatinine collection, 1. Patient should void bladder, then drink at least 500 mL (approximately 17 oz) of water. 2. A urine sample should be collected within 1 hour. 3. Pour exactly 10 mL of random urine into a Quest Diagnostics Beta-2 Microglobulin Transport Tube (#179979 available through Client Supply). 4. Ship refrigerated. 5. Alternatively, if the collection tubes are not available, pH the specimen to between 6 and 8 using 1N NaOH prior to shipping. Beta-2 Microglobulin in urine is unstable in acidic urine (less than pH 6). Exactly 10 mL of urine in the Quest Diagnostics Beta-2 Microglobulin Transport Tube is required to achieve the required pH of between 6 and 8. Any volume above or below 10 mL will result in a pH that is outside the acceptable range.

- Sampling time is not critical for industrial exposure monitoring. Metals with timing “not critical” have very long elimination half-lives and accumulate in the body over years, some for a lifetime. After a couple of weeks of exposure, specimens can be collected at any time.

- As β2-microglobulin can degrade under acidic conditions in the bladder, workers should empty their bladder and then drink a large glass of water at the start of the visit. Urine should then be collected within one hour. The pH of the urine should be measured and adjusted to 6-8, if necessary, using 0.1 N NaOH.

Verify these ranges and sources
We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
