Ranges

Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ

Panels that include this biomarker

  • Porphyrins, Fractionated, Quantitative, 24-Hour Urine 729

8 analytes · Urine · Fasting not stated · Turnaround Set up: Sun, Tues-Fri; Report available: 7 days

    Method and collection
    Method
    High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
    Collection
24-hour urine collected with 5 grams of sodium carbonate, refrigerated and protected from light during collection is preferred. Collection with no preservative is acceptable, if properly refrigerated and light protected. 24-hour total volume must be provided on the test requisition.

  • Porphyrins, Fractionated, Quantitative and Porphobilinogen, 24-Hour Urine 17198

11 analytes · Urine · Fasting not stated

    Method and collection
    Method
High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) • Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry
    Collection
24-hour urine, collection should be adjusted to a pH of 6-7 with 5 g sodium carbonate (Na2CO3). Add the sodium carbonate at the start of the collection. The urine should be refrigerated and protected from light during collection. Whenever possible, the specimen should be collected during an acute episode because porphobilinogen (PBG) may decrease rapidly upon remission. PBG may also degrade when samples are exposed to UV light for extended periods, or are transported at ambient temperature. If an amber collection jug/urine cup is not available, the sample must be protected from light by completely wrapping the container in aluminum foil. Twenty-four hour specimens should be refrigerated and protected from UV light during collection. PBG is most stable at pH 6-7, but samples may be sent with or without preservative. All results should be interpreted in the context of clinical findings, relevant history, and other laboratory data.

Panels that include this biomarker

  • Porphyrins, Quantitative, 24-Hour Urine 003194

    12 analytes · Urine · Fasting not stated · Turnaround 3 - 7 days

    Method and collection
    Method
High-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorometric detection
    Collection
Instruct patient to void at 8 AM (or 8 PM) and discard the specimen. Then collect all the urine, including the final specimen voided at the end of the 24-hour collection period (ie, 8 AM [or 8 PM] the following day). Mix well. Measure and record total urine volume on the test request form, along with the patient's name, date, and time collection started and finished. Transfer required aliquot into a LabCorp amber plastic transport tube with amber cap (LabCorp N° 23598). (If amber transport tubes are unavailable, cover transport tube completely, top and bottom, with aluminum foil. Identify specimen with patient's name directly on the amber transport tube and on the outside of the aluminum foil. Secure with tape.) Specimen must be kept refrigerated during transport.

We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
