Ranges

Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ

  • Sickle Cell Screen with Reflex to Hemoglobinopathy Evaluation 37679

11 analytes · Blood · Fasting not stated · Turnaround Set up: Mon-Fri (Day shift); Report available: 2 days

    Method and collection
    Method
    Solubility
    Collection
Maintain specimen at room temperature. Do not centrifuge. Patient age and ethnicity are necessary for proper interpretation. Blood transfusions within the last 4 months may affect results. Note: This test is not appropriate for patients less than 6 months old due to interference by Hemoglobin F. In these cases it is suggested that test code 35489 (Hemoglobinopathy Evaluation) be ordered. If tube drawn is shared with lead testing, trace metal-free EDTA (i.e. royal blue-top or tan-top) tube is required.

    Collection
Specimen must arrive within 72 hours of draw. Both whole blood and serum are required for this test. Whole blood Adult: Draw blood and send in three separate EDTA (lavender-top) tube(s) each containing 5 mL of whole blood (15 mL total) refrigerated. Specimen cannot be frozen. Pediatric: Draw blood and send in three separate EDTA (lavender-top) tube(s) each containing 1 mL of whole blood (3 mL total) refrigerated. Specimen cannot be frozen. Serum: Draw blood in a red-top tube (no-gel) or a serum gel tube. Spin down and send 1 mL (0.5 mL minimum) of serum refrigerated (preferred) or room temperature (acceptable). Note: 1. Patient's age and sex are required on test requisition. 2. Include recent transfusion information. 3. Label specimens appropriately (blood, serum).

Verify these ranges and sources

We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
