Ranges

Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ

Quest Diagnostics, Comprehensive Toxic Metal Panel, 24-Hour Urine 37081

PopulationInterval
Arsenic, 24-Hour Urine≤80 mcg/L |
Lead, 24-Hour Urine<80 mcg/L |
Mercury, 24-Hour Urine≤20 mcg/L | Toxic: ≥150 mcg/L
Cadmium, 24-Hour Urine≤5.0 mcg/L |
Cobalt, 24-Hour Urine≤2.0 mcg/L |
Thallium, 24-Hour Urine≤2 mcg/L | Toxic: >200 mcg/L

    Method
    Inductively Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectrometry (ICP/MS)
    Preparation

    Collection
Avoid worksite collection. Collect urine in an acid-washed or metal-free plastic container. Tests performed on a specimen submitted in a non-trace element tube or non acid-washed/non metal-free container may not accurately reflect the patient's level. If a non-trace element tube/container is received, it will be accepted for testing. However, elevated results shall be reported with a message that a re-submission with a trace element tube/container is recommended.

Sampling time is not critical for industrial exposure monitoring. Metals with timing “not critical” have very long elimination half-lives and accumulate in the body over years, some for a lifetime. After a couple of weeks of exposure, specimens can be collected at any time. Optional protocol: If the specimen is a 24-hour collection, instruct the patient to void at 8 AM and discard the specimen. Then collect all urine including the final specimen voided at the end of the 24-hour collection period (ie, 8 AM the next morning). Screw the lid on securely. Collect without preservatives. Mix well. Sampling time is not critical for industrial monitoring.
    Reference notes
    • Environmental exposure: <50 μg/L, <80 μg/24 hours • Occupation exposure: BEI® (sampling time is not critical): 150 μg/g creatinine;1 chelation therapy: <600 μg/24 hours (after 1 g EDTA I.V. or 2 g DMSA P.O.)

We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
