Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody
A thyroid antibody test measures the level of thyroid antibodies in a sample of your blood to check for an autoimmune thyroid disease. Your thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in your neck.
Thyroid Antibody Tests, MedlinePlus, National Library of Medicine
The test measures thyroid antibodies in a blood sample to check for an autoimmune thyroid disease. Thyroid autoantibodies affect the thyroid's ability to make thyroid hormones, which shape how the body uses energy.

See why clinicians order the test
Clinicians may order the test when other tests have already shown hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.
Goal: Thyroid function
Clinicians read high TPO antibody levels as a sign that Hashimoto's disease is causing hypothyroidism.
Condition: Hypothyroidism
Clinicians also use the test to screen for autoimmune thyroid disease when other thyroid results are too high or too low and risk is high.
Goal: Thyroid function

- Patients taking calcineurin inhibitors should stop their medication for 72 hours prior to draw. Specimen collection after fluorescein dye angiography should be delayed for at least 3 days. For patients on hemodialysis, specimen collection should be delayed for 2 weeks after angiography. According to the assay manufacturer Siemens: samples containing fluorescein can produce falsely depressed values. Dietary supplements containing biotin may interfere in assays and may skew results to be either falsely high or falsely low. For patients receiving the recommended daily doses of biotin, draw samples at least 8 hours following the last biotin supplementation. For patients on mega-doses of biotin supplements, draw samples at least 72 hours following the last biotin supplementation.

We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
