Ranges

Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ

Quest Diagnostics, Comprehensive Toxic Metal Panel, 24-Hour Urine 37081

PopulationInterval
Arsenic, 24-Hour Urine≤80 mcg/L |
Lead, 24-Hour Urine<80 mcg/L |
Mercury, 24-Hour Urine≤20 mcg/L | Toxic: ≥150 mcg/L
Cadmium, 24-Hour Urine≤5.0 mcg/L |
Cobalt, 24-Hour Urine≤2.0 mcg/L |
Thallium, 24-Hour Urine≤2 mcg/L | Toxic: >200 mcg/L

Panels that include this biomarker

  • Cadmium, Urine 072249

    4 analytes · Urine · Fasting not stated · Turnaround 2 - 4 days

    Method and collection
    Method
    Inductively-coupled plasma/mass spectrometry (ICP/MS)
    Collection
Sampling time is not critical for industrial exposure monitoring. Metals with timing “not critical” have very long elimination half-lives and accumulate in the body over years, some for a lifetime. After a couple of weeks of exposure, specimens can be collected at any time.
    Reference notes
    • Environmental exposure: <2.0 μg/g creatinine, <3.0 μg/24 hours • Occupational exposure: OSHA Cadmium Standard: 3.0 μg/g creatinine, BEI®: 5.0 μg/g creatinine1

    6 analytes · Blood · Fasting not stated · Turnaround 2 - 4 days

    Method and collection
    Method
    See individual tests.
    Collection
As β2-microglobulin can degrade under acidic conditions in the bladder, workers should empty their bladder and then drink a large glass of water at the start of the visit. Urine should then be collected within one hour. The pH of the urine should be measured and adjusted to 6-8, if necessary, using 0.1 N NaOH.

  • Heavy Metals Profile II, Urine 250281

    12 analytes · Urine · Fasting not stated · Turnaround 3 - 6 days

    Method and collection
    Method
    Inductively-coupled plasma/mass spectrometry (ICP/MS)
    Preparation
Patient should avoid seafood and red wine 72 hours prior to collection.
    Collection
Optional protocol : Instruct the patient to void at 8 AM and discard the specimen. Then collect all urine including the final specimen voided at the end of the 24-hour collection period (ie, 8 AM the next morning). Avoid contact with metal during collection. Screw the lid on securely. See individual tests for collection times for industrial monitoring.

    Method and collection
    Method
    Inductively Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectrometry (ICP/MS)
    Preparation
Avoid seafood consumption for 48 hours prior to collection
    Collection
Avoid worksite collection. Collect urine in an acid-washed or metal-free plastic container. Tests performed on a specimen submitted in a non-trace element tube or non acid-washed/non metal-free container may not accurately reflect the patient's level. If a non-trace element tube/container is received, it will be accepted for testing. However, elevated results shall be reported with a message that a re-submission with a trace element tube/container is recommended.

We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
