Ranges
Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ
Quest Diagnostics, Cobalt, Random Urine 37513
| Population | Interval |
|---|---|
| Non-exposed Adult | ≤2.8 mcg/L |
| Biological Exposure Index (end of shift/work week) | ≤15.0 mcg/L |

- Method
- Inductively-coupled plasma/mass spectrometry (ICP/MS)
- Collection
- Sampling time is end of shift at end of work week. Metals with timing “end of shift at end of work week” (meaning four or five consecutive working days with exposure) are eliminated with half-lives longer than five hours. Such metals accumulate in the body during the work week; therefore, their timing is critical in relation to previous exposures. Optional protocol: Instruct the patient to void at 8 AM and discard the specimen. Then collect all urine including the final specimen voided at the end of the 24-hour collection period (ie, 8 AM the next morning). Avoid contact with metal during collection. Screw the lid on securely.
- Reference notes
- • Environmental exposure: 1.0−2.0 μg/L; <2.0 μg/g creatinine • Occupational exposure: BEI® (sampling time is end of shift at end of work week): 15.0 μg/L1

- Method
- Inductively Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectrometry (ICP/MS)
- Collection
- Avoid worksite collection. Collect urine in an acid washed or metal free plastic container. Tests performed on a specimen submitted in a non-trace element tube or non acid-washed/non metal-free container may not accurately reflect the patient's level. If a non-trace element tube/container is received, it will be accepted for testing. However, elevated results shall be reported with a message that a re-submission with a trace element tube/container is recommended.

Verify these ranges and sources
We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
