Ranges

Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ

  • Porphobilinogen, Quantitative, 24-Hour Urine 726

Urine · Fasting not stated · Turnaround Set up: Sun, Tues-Fri; Report available: 7 days

    Method and collection
    Method
    Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry
    Collection
24-hour urine, collection should be adjusted to a pH of 6-7 with 5g sodium carbonate (Na2CO3). Add the sodium carbonate at the start of the collection. The urine should be refrigerated and protected from light during collection. Whenever possible, the specimen should be collected during an acute episode because porphobilingen (PBG) may decrease rapidly upon remission. PBG may also degrade when samples are exposed to UV light for extended periods, or are transported at ambient temperature. If an amber collection jug/urine cup is not available, the sample must be protected from light by completely wrapping the container in aluminum foil. Twenty-four hour specimens should be refrigerated and protected from UV light during collection. PBG is most stable at pH 6-7, but samples may be sent with or without preservative. All results should be interpreted in the context of clinical findings, relevant history, and other laboratory data.

    Method and collection
    Method
    Ion-exchange chromatography/spectrophotometry
    Collection
Instruct the patient to void at 8 AM (or 8 PM) and discard the specimen. Then collect all the urine, including the final specimen voided at the end of the 24-hour collection period (ie, 8 AM [or 8 PM] the following day), in the 24-hour collection container (Labcorp No. 23301). Specimen must be kept refrigerated during collection. Measure and record on the test request form the 24-hour total volume. Mix well. Transfer the urine into a LabCorp amber plastic frozen transport tube with amber cap (Labcorp No. 78656). Label the container with the patient's name, date, and time collection started and finished. The specimen should be frozen immediately and maintained frozen until tested. (If amber tube and cap are not available, cover a clear plastic transport tube completely from top to bottom with aluminum foil. Identify the specimen with the patient's name directly on the transport tube and the outside of the aluminum foil. Secure with tape.) To avoid delays in turnaround time when requesting multiple tests on frozen samples, please submit separate frozen specimens for each test requested .

We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
