Ranges
Each lab publishes a reference range for the population groups it tests, usually the middle 95% of results. These intervals describe that population, not an optimal or healthy target. How ranges differ
Quest Diagnostics, Porphyrins, Fractionated, Quantitative, Random Urine 36592
| Population | Interval |
|---|---|
| Uroporphyrin I | 3.6-21.1 mcg/g creat |
| Uroporphyrin III | ≤5.6 mcg/g creat |
| Heptacarboxyporphyrin | ≤3.4 mcg/g creat |
| Hexacarboxyporphyrin | ≤6.3 mcg/g creat |
| Pentacarboxyporphyrin | ≤4.1 mcg/g creat |
| Coproporphyrin I | 6.5-33.2 mcg/g creat |
| Coproporphyrin III | 4.8-88.6 mcg/g creat |
| Total Porphyrins | 27.0-153.6 mcg/g creat |

Labcorp catalog pageMethod and collection
- Method
- High-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorometric detection
- Collection
- Transfer required aliquot into a LabCorp amber plastic transport tube with amber cap (LabCorp No. 23598). (If amber transport tubes are unavailable, cover transport tube completely, top and bottom, with aluminum foil. Identify specimen with patient's name directly on the amber transport tube and on the outside of the aluminum foil. Secure with tape.) Specimen must be kept refrigerated during transport.

- Instruct patient to void at 8 AM (or 8 PM) and discard the specimen. Then collect all the urine, including the final specimen voided at the end of the 24-hour collection period (ie, 8 AM [or 8 PM] the following day). Mix well. Measure and record total urine volume on the test request form, along with the patient's name, date, and time collection started and finished. Transfer required aliquot into a LabCorp amber plastic transport tube with amber cap (LabCorp N° 23598). (If amber transport tubes are unavailable, cover transport tube completely, top and bottom, with aluminum foil. Identify specimen with patient's name directly on the amber transport tube and on the outside of the aluminum foil. Secure with tape.) Specimen must be kept refrigerated during transport.

We compile this page from named laboratory catalogs, guidelines and studies. Labs calculate reference intervals from the people they test, for one assay method and one population group, so an interval describes that population rather than an optimal target.
